Math & Computer Science Colloquium Series: "Mathematica 7 in Education and Research"
Start Date: 11/5/2009Start Time: 1:30 PM
End Date: 11/5/2009End Time: 2:45 PM
Event Description
Andy Dorsett, an academic key account manager for Wolfram Research, Inc., will give a talk, “Mathematica 7 in Education and Research,” on Thursday, November 5, 2009 as part of the Department of Math & Computer Science’s Colloquium Series. The lecture and demonstration will take place from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. in Ryland Hall, Room 213. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Dorsett earned his B.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern Indiana and his M.S. in mathematics education from Indiana State University. After eight years as a junior high and high school math teacher, Dorsett joined Wolfram Research in July 2008. In his position, he helps current Mathematica schools utilize Mathematica’s full potential as a powerful classroom tool.

His talk will illustrate the capabilities of Mathematica 7 that are directly applicable for use in teaching and researching on campus. The presentation will cover 2D and 3d visualization, dynamic interactivity, on-demand scientific data, example-drive course materials, symbolic interface construction, practical and theoretical applications, and demonstrations of digital image processing and parallelization. Current users will benefit from seeing the new features of Mathematica 7 but prior knowledge of Mathematica is not required.
