likes of Federico Fellini. His last motion picture seen as a
masterpiece is not so much a story a wistful montage of vignettes in
which the idiosyncratic filmmaker revisits the coastal Italian town of
his birth, Rimini. The movie's title says it all: in the Italian
dialect of Romagna, the region that includes Rimini, Amarcord means "We
remember." Recipient of the 1974 Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film,
Amarcord takes place in the Mussolini-led Italy in the mid-1930s.
Employing an episodic structure built around the seasons' cycle,
Fellini creates an impressionistic work that is almost painterly in its
beauty and ability to evoke bittersweet emotion. The film is
especially noteworthy for the Giuseppe Rotunno's gorgeous
cinematography and Nino Rota's haunting musical score. Janus Films'
restored print of Amarcord played to sellout crowds at the New Film

likes of Federico Fellini.

Mellon Foundation, will commence with a one-day academic symposium in which three leading scholars of nineteenth-century American and European political, social, and cultural history will explore the life, works, and legacies of the famed French traveler, Alexis de Tocqueville.

Speakers

Laurie Maffly-Kipp, Associate Professor of American & Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“Liberty’s Secrets: Counternarratives of Democratic Religion”

Professor Maffly-Kipp specializes in the study of African American culture during the nineteenth century, the history of immigration, ethnicity, and race, and the religious history of the American West and Pacific Rim. She is the author of Religion and Society in Frontier California (1994) and is currently completing a second book project entitled African-American Communal Narratives: Religion, Race and Memory in Nineteenth Century America. Her presentation will examine tensions between Toqueville’s desire to depict American religion as a force for political stability and countervailing religious developments during the 1830s, particularly African-American civil piety and the emergence of Mormonism, with its distinctive combination of hierarchy and individual agency.

Jennifer Pitts, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Chicago

“Democracy and Domination: Empire, Slavery, and Democratic Corruption in Tocqueville’s Thought”

Professor Pitts has translated and edited Tocqueville’s essays on French imperial policy in Algeria and published A Turn to Empire: The Rise of Imperial Liberalism in Britain and France (2005). A leading scholar of European political history, she is currently at work on Boundaries of the International, which explores European debates over legal relations with extra-European societies during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Pitts’s lecture explores connections between democracy and domination in the works of Tocqueville and his contemporaries during the 1830s and 1840s. Reflecting on the increasing propensity for violence in American public life, Tocqueville worried about the possible ill effects of universal suffrage and mass immigration, while some of his American friends insisted instead that the gravest threats to democracy came from powerful Wall Street speculators and Southern planters.

Elisa Tamarkin, Associate Professor of English, University of California at Berkeley

“Tocqueville in the Age of News”

Professor Tamarkin’s recent book, Anglophilia: Deference, Devotion, and Antebellum America (2008), examines Americans’ enduring fascination with British culture. Her wide ranging scholarly interests in nineteenth-century literature and intellectual history include abolitionism and antislavery, circum-Atlantic cultures, and the history of the American university. Tamarkin’s symposium presentation asks what Tocqueville can tell us about the habits of mind and economies of knowledge that the institution of the news cultivates. Drawing upon literary and visual representations of the antebellum press, and reflecting broadly on the faith in timeliness and public opinion that helped to define the intellectual horizon of Americans during the age of news, she explores the central place of newspapers in Tocqueville’s understanding of democratic life.

Evening of Etiquette (11/12/2009)

Start Date:

11/12/2009

Start Time:

6:30 PM

End Date:

11/12/2009

End Time:

8:30 PM

University of Richmond - Tyler Haynes Commons
Room: Alice Haynes Room

Join the Career Development Center Thursday, Nov. 12 for an evening with friends and UR alumni to learn how to make the right impression during a business meal. Vanaja is set in rural South India and focuses on the 14-year old Vanaja who is the daughter of a low-caste
fisherman. With the encouragement of a local sooth-sayer, Vanaja goes to work in the house of the local landlady, who teaches the young girl the art of Kuchipudi dance. In the past 50 years, more than $1 trillion in development-related aid has been transferred from rich countries to Africa. There are three types of aid: humanitarian or emergency aid dispensed in response to disasters; charity-based aid, disbursed by organizations; and systematic aid, payments made directly through government-to-government transfers or through institutions like the World Bank. Not only has this aid not improved the quality of life for Africans, it has hurt more than it has helped. Moyo argues that foreign aid should be phased out and replaced with innovative ways to finance development including trade with China, accessing the capital markets, and microfinance. Suggesting that Western leaders are so desperate for answers about Africa that they will listen to anybody's advice, she dismisses today's celebrity culture of philanthropy and bashes the likes of Bono and Bob Geldolf.

Born and educated in Zambia, Moyo brings to her subject a rare combination of academic expertise and world experience. Her training in economics took her from the World Bank to Harvard and on to Oxford, where she obtained her doctorate. She also worked for eight years at Goldman Sachs. The author of Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better way for Africa was named one of Time's most influential people in the world for 2009.

Dr. Moyo's visit to campus is supported in part by the Modlin Center for the Arts, the Department of Theatre and Dance and the University's Greater Richmond Alumni Chapter.

Dr. Moyo will speak from the set of The African Company Presents Richard III in Alice Jepson Theatre.

The Jepson Leadership Forum is grateful for this opportunity to partner with our theatre department.

Information Session & Campus Tour (11/16/2009)

Start Date:

11/16/2009

Start Time:

2:15 PM

End Date:

11/16/2009

End Time:

4:15 PM

University of Richmond - Brunet Memorial Hall
