Richmond is home to a vibrant arts scene. UR Downtown hosts gatherings in advance of selected downtown performances for University of Richmond students, faculty, and staff and special guests. Registration is required. Transportation is provided from campus, and performance tickets will be purchased for students in advance.

On Thursday, October 5, 6:30 p.m., join us for the Festival of South African Dance presented by the Modlin Center for the Arts at the Dominion Arts Center. Featuring twenty dancers accompanied by live musicians, the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies share the Carpenter Theatre stage for an evening of exhilarating urban street dance that convey stories of hard work, human struggles, and a longing for a better life. Gumboots dancers, clad in Wellington boots, perform a dance style created by South African miners who used foot stomping as a means of communication when talking was prohibited during Apartheid. Established in 1992 by Sello Reuben Modiga, Pantsula dancers use hip-hop and breakdancing against a backdrop of house music to express social issues. The UR Downtown Shuttle departs from Tyler Haynes Commons at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., then participants will walk down the street to the Dominion Arts Center for a pre-performance discussion with the directors of The Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies. A shuttle will return to campus following the event.
