Location: Weinstein Hall, Brown Alley Room

The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) hosts weekly Brown Bag discussions, open to members of the campus and the community, from 12:30–1:25p.m. on most Fridays during the academic year. Each week, a speaker or small panel leads a presentation on a provocative social issue, then opens up the floor for discussion.

This week's CCE Brown Bag speaker will define yoga and mindfulness and review how these practices are beyond internal, individual practices, but powerful tools to undertake and promote positive social developments that benefit the greater community.  Historically, yoga and meditation principles have been the root for non-violent resistance movements from Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelson Mandela, and if continually practiced individually and collectively, can be socially transformative practices.  She will discuss the impact of implementing these practice in school systems, prisons, family units and mental health institutions, and introduce her existing programs that are taking place throughout the city of Richmond.
