The baccalaureate service is inherited from the universities of Western Europe and associated with the commencement exercises of American colleges and universities since colonial times. The service remains an integral part of the commencement exercises of many of America’s private colleges and universities, symbolizing the connection between these institutions and their religious origins. The University of Richmond was founded by Virginia Baptists, although it no longer has a formal religious affiliation. The Baccalaureate Service provides a time for worship and thanksgiving that reflects the diversity of faith traditions on our campus. This service recognizes the important milestone of graduation as we give thanks for our students and their achievements and look forward to the contributions each will make in the years ahead.

All graduates and their families are invited to attend Baccalaureate. No tickets are required.
