The campus community is invited to attend an evening of capstone presentations by students of two Sophomore Scholars in Residence (SSIR) communities: SSIR Crusades & Holy Wars Then and Now and SSIR The Great War, Modernity & Memory.  This event will take place on Thursday, April 26, 6:00-9:00 pm in Westhampton Living Room, with student groups from each class alternating their presentations throughout the evening.  We welcome you to attend at any point during this timeframe, for any length of time you are available.  Light refreshments will be served.

Building on their work together in class and on their travels through Bulgaria and Romania last fall, we will hear from Dr. Martin Sulzer-Reichel’s Crusades and Holy Wars students about the “sanctity” of locations and the mythology and reverence surrounding that status.  Students have studied how the historical narrative changes in the course of time, sometimes based on locations, such as Jerusalem and the Middle East, but also sacred sites across America and, more locally, around Richmond.  Can history teach us how to avoid future conflict and hostility?
