The Global Environment Speaker Series and the Department of Geography and the Environment welcome Dr. Patrick Bond from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and Dr. Mary Finley-Brook from the University of Richmond, two leading scholars on themes of environmental justice, to discuss the topic of contested pipelines. How are the environmental burdens and benefits inequitably distributed within our society for large-scale infrastructure projects such as oil and gas pipelines? Competing stakeholder interests that intersect race, class, and gender will be discussed for these contested spaces using case studies in Virginia and Durban, South Africa. The power of citizen movements to demand healthy air, clean water, and land rights will be discussed.

This event is free and open to the public.
