Dir. Andreas Dresen, 2018, Germany, 127 min.

With tenderness and humor, this biopic portrays the extraordinary story of East German folk singer Gerhard Gundermann. An idealist who worked as a coal-digger by day, and by night took to the stage, moving people with his music, all the while leading a secret life as an informant for the secret police. A story of state repression, self-preservation, and passion for life, this film paints a complex study of a man of many contradictions.
