The rich range of performing arts in Bali reflect the complex spiritual and social realities of Balinese culture. In Bali, the life of the Hindu-Buddhist Balinese is filled with ceremonies which pay honor and respect to three distinct worlds – the divine, the human, and the natural. This evening of discussion and demonstration of Balinese performance will highlight the historical developments and recent trends, including the harmonious relationship between music and dance with the religious and communal practices of daily life. The evening will open with a brief introductory lecture moderated by ethnomusicologist Dr. Andrew McGraw, delve into how these things look and sound with performance demonstrations by Gamelan Cudamani, and conclude with time for discussion and conversation.

Tue, Sept. 20, 6:30-7:0pm, Weinstein Hall, Brown Alley Room
Free; registration required. Light refreshments will be provided.

Presented in partnership with Office of the Chaplaincy.

Gamelan Çudamani performs at the Modlin Center on September 22 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are free. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit modlin.richmond.edu.
