Volcano Theatre, The Book of Life
Adult $50/40/30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10 | UR Student $5
In The Book of Life, Canada's Volcano Theatre and famed Rwandan writer and actor Kiki Katese take us on a powerful theatrical exploration of the incalculable loss of genocide, featuring music performed and sung by the internationally acclaimed Women Drummers of Rwanda. In a time when the world seems racked by disharmony, struggle, and hatred, The Book of Life offers a path forward that is life-affirming and full of joy.
Odile Gakire Katese (Kiki) is a professional dreamer and a woman of firsts. As a Rwandan playwright, director, and cultural entrepreneur, among her many accomplishments are the first women’s drumming company (Ingoma Nshya, Women Initiatives), the first professional contemporary dance company (Amizero Dance Kompagnie), the first international festival (Festival Arts Azimuts), the first national festival (Rwanda Drum Festival), the first co-op ice cream store (Inzozi Nziza – Sweet Dreams), and the first recipient of the League of Professional Theatre Women’s Rosamond Gilder/Martha Coigney International Award.
Volcano Theatre creates outward-looking and relevant theatrical art, rigorously made for live audiences in Canada and abroad, to work across boundaries of all kinds in this pursuit: geographic, cultural, and formal.
