Tokyo-based company Sankai Juku returns for a rare North American tour with KŌSA – between two mirrors, a new work featuring some of its most singular moments of sublime visual spectacle, technical precision, and emotional depth. Dance Magazine says: “Amagatsu conveys the infinitely minute yet spellbinding transformations of a world in constant metamorphosis.” This performance offers a fond reacquaintance for devoted fans and a perfect introduction for new audiences.

Sankai Juku is a Butoh dance company founded by Ushio Amagatsu in 1975. Amagatsu trained in classical and modern dance before becoming immersed in Butoh. For Amagatsu, Butoh expresses the language of the body, presenting an abstract vision of the infinite and exploring evolutionary movement.

The company has toured internationally since 1980 and performed in over 700 cities in 45 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas—a testament to the universal nature of Sankai Juku’s work. Crossing geographic borders and appealing to diverse audiences, the company has developed the themes of its work while searching for and moving toward new realms.
