Gold, Silver, and Bronze: An Introduction to the Ancient and Medieval Coin Collection of the Lora Robins Gallery with David Hershey
In the 1970s the Lora Robins Gallery received multiple donations of Ancient and Medieval coins. These donations predominantly contained coins of the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic Caliphates, and the Crusader States. The coin collection totals more than 15,000 pieces, of which only a fraction of have previously been on display or available to the University Community. With the upcoming reinstallation of the Lora Robins Gallery there will be a permanent display of Coins of the Byzantine Empire and a classroom setting where more in-depth discussions can be had.
This talk will introduce a selection of the Ancient and Medieval gold coins that are part of the collection. Examples will include solidus from both the Late Roman and Byzantine eras as well as Islamic dinar, Sicilian tari and Venetian ducats. If you are a professor interested in finding out how to use these artifacts in your classes or simply someone interested in seeing history up close, please join us for this presentation. Free and open to everyone!
