Pacifica Quartet with Anthony McGill, American Stories
University of Richmond, VA 23173
Pre-show artist talk at 6:30 p.m.
The multi-Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet and 2020 Avery Fisher Prize winner Anthony McGill have ambitious goals for their American Stories project. McGill, the New York Philharmonic’s principal clarinet, describes it as an endeavor designed to “expand the capacity for art and music to change the world.” Join us for a concert grounded in the stories told by American composers including Ben Shirley, James Lee III, Richard Danielpour, and Valerie Coleman.
“With these stories,” McGill has said, “we connect the idea of community and a community of diverse creators all around the world. We are telling a story not only within each individual work, but also the story of the composers themselves. We as the performers are also communicating our stories as well as theirs to create this project. The power of music is its ability to tell stories and to connect people with one another.”
American Stories was a 2024 Grammy nominee, and you won't want to miss hearing it live. We hope this music inspires you to imagine the ways in which your own American story might harmonize with the experiences of others.
