Mark Morris Dance Group, Dances to American Music: Soul of America
University of Richmond, VA 23173
Pre-show artist talk with Mark Morris at 6:00 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall
Modlin Center for the Arts is no stranger to the work of brilliant choreographer and director Mark Morris. This year, Mark Morris Dance Group returns to perform Soul of America, which includes a new work set to the music of legendary stride pianist James P. Johnson. The music of iconic American composers like George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, and Louis Moreau Gottschalk will underpin the program of stirring and stunning choreography by this legendary artist who The New York Times calls "the most successful and influential choreographer alive." The Washington Post says of Morris' work, "[The] dances simply feel right, to the eye, intellect, and nervous system," and that sense of rightness will be on full display as his company of exceptional dances takes to the Alice Jepson Theatre stage.
Morris and members of his company will also engage with University of Richmond students and members of the wider community, deepening Modlin’s connection to one of the most creative minds working in the arts today.
