Modlin Center for the Arts is no stranger to the work of brilliant choreographer and director Mark Morris. This year, Mark Morris Dance Group returns to perform Dances to American Music, the company's 45th-anniversary program, featuring the debut of new choreography, performances of signature works from the repertory, and programs set to the diverse and powerful voices of American music.
Three Preludes, a solo showcasing Gershwin’s jazzy elegance and rhythmic brilliance. Dancing Honeymoon is lighthearted romp through popular songs from the 1920s and ’30s, brimming with wit and nostalgia. You’ve Got to Be Modernistic, set to seven rare gems by Harlem stride piano legend James P. Johnson, is arranged and performed live by jazz pianist Ethan Iverson.
"There is dance that amplifies music, and there is music designed to amplify dance. With Mark Morris, the dance is the music. Watching Mark Morris Dance Group perform is like looking at the measures of a score, each dancer representing a note." —Fjord Review
Morris and members of his company will also engage with University of Richmond students and members of the wider community, deepening Modlin’s connection to one of the most creative minds working in the arts today.
