Davóne Tines & Ruckus
University of Richmond, VA 23173
Pre-show artist talk at 6:30 p.m.
Of Davóne Tines, the Los Angeles Times raves, “[He] is as mesmerizing as a singer can be … His voice can fill a space and then some, ringing gloriously but also, under pressure, distorting (you might even say queering) the very space he commanded.” Meanwhile, San Francisco Classical Voice described Ruckus as “the world’s only [baroque] period-instrument rock band.” All of the musicians are members of American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*) and share that forward-looking ensemble’s commitment to creating collaborative, contemporary work. Together Tines and the band will explore four centuries of American music with reimaged songs, hymns, and ballads in a meditation and interrogation centered around the Black American experience.
Ruckus features Doug Balliett on violone and electric bass, Elliot Figg on harpsichord and synthesizer, Keir GoGwilt on violin, Manami Mizumoto on violin and viola, Paul Holmes Morton on banjo and theorbo, and Clay Zeller-Townson on reeds and percussion.
