Criminal Charges Without Conviction: Expungement, Sealing, and What the New Laws Mean

When a person is charged with a crime, the record created has the potential to stay with them for the rest of their lives – regardless of whether the charge was dropped or the individual is ultimately found not to be guilty of the crime charged. This record affects an individual’s ability to obtain credit, secure employment, or find housing.

In response to this dilemma, advocates have worked to help these individuals expunge these charges from their records. This presentation will cover the law of expungement and record sealing in Virginia, providing documents that will help demonstrate how an expungement case is initiated in court. Through this CLE, the Carrico Center and Justice Forward Virginia hope to teach attorneys about this area of law and give them the tools necessary to provide limited scope legal assistance.
