Prison Education in Virginia
University of Richmond, VA 23173
This semester in our Sociology of Higher Education class, we have discussed race, history, and inequality, recognizing the immense privileges and disadvantages within the system and beyond it. To round out our unit on Resistance and Reform, we invite the campus community to join us for a discussion on Prison Education featuring Terri Erwin, Ph.D., director of Virginia Consensus for Higher Education, and Kenneth Hunter, organizer with the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. It goes without saying that college access is a longstanding and important issue, though one that largely ignores a large sector of our population — the incarcerated. This panel discussion and Q&A will center legislation in Virginia, locate prison education policies nationally, and grapple with the challenges of justice and reform.
Those passionate about social change, equity, and education, as well as those who may be supporting loved ones navigating the incarceration system, are especially encouraged to join us!
