Join us on Thursday, March 19, as Richmond Law presents the 2026 William Green Award for Professional Excellence to A.E. Dick Howard, '54. Howard is the Warner-Booker Distinguished Professor of International Law Emeritus at UVA Law and a nationally renowned constitutional scholar. He has been recognized by Washingtonian as one of the nation’s most respected educators and by the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Library of Virginia as one of the “greatest Virginians” of the 20th century.

Professor Howard will recall highlights of his storied career, including his clerkship with Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, his role in the drafting and adoption of Virginia’s Constitution, and his assistance to drafters of constitutions in other countries, especially in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe.

Established in 1987 and endowed with a gift from Judge Robert R. Merhige, Jr., L’42 in 1992, the Green Award is named after Judge William Green, one of the original members of the Richmond Law faculty who delivered the inaugural address at the opening session of the first law school of Richmond College on October 10, 1870. The award is presented to a distinguished lawyer whose career offers an inspirational model for our students. Past recipients include Chief Justices William H. Rehnquist and John G. Roberts, Jr., Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Oliver White Hill, Sr., and Senator Tim Kaine and his wife Anne Holton.
