Pro Bono Estate Planning: Vanilla Cases, Sweet Results

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Benjamin Franklin, 1789.

While the certainty of this truth remains unchanged since 1789, many Americans are not prepared for how their financial and legal affairs will be managed when they are no longer capable or present to handle them. Without key planning documents in place, individuals languish in uncertainty over whether their wishes will be effectuated. Further, loved ones are forced to navigate court and bureaucratic hurdles in order to access medical care or manage the financial obligations of their friend or family member in need.

Andy Nea, Pro Bono Parter at Williams Mullen, created the Pro Bono Wills Clinic to bring pro bono estate planning services into the communities where they are needed, granting clients the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are prepared for what the next chapter of life may bring. These pro bono clinics connect pro bono attorneys and volunteer law students with clients to draft wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives – all signed, notarized, and effective the day of the clinic.

Please join the Carrico Center as we welcome Andy and Ami Kim, Executive Director of the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, the institutional partner in the Pro Bono Wills Program. Together, they will walk attendees through the steps of drafting a will, power of attorney, and medical directive for a pro bono client and share instructions on how attorneys can bring this newfound knowledge to use at a Pro Bono Wills Clinic in the future.
